Random : Knit worthy

As a knitter, I'm always willing to knit something for the people I love. For my dear boyfriend, for his mom, for my mom, for my close friends (the ones that don't know how to knit!), for my relatives. And as knitters, you guys know what a knitted gift means to us. It's neither just yarn nor just time. It's the love we put in. Every knitted stitch is made with the recipient in mind. And we want the gift to be perfect, to be amazing! Even if it's a simple scarf. Because you know that they'll love and cherish it.

As a knitter, I've also knit for not so knit worthy people. You know, you say yes, you don't really want to but the person seems so enthusiastic. And so you knit, and knit, and sometimes it's not a project you really want to knit but you do it anyway. You can't wait to finish it, so you can knit something you will really enjoy. And you hope that, at least, the recipient will like it. And they don't always do.

Where do I go with this? Well, this week-end I just discovered a knit worthy friend. For Christmas I knitted him a simple yet filled with love scarf. I didn't know how he would react. It was the first time I was knitting for him. He loved it, but you know how sometimes guys are, they do not extend their joy. So, I can say that I was pleased with his reaction.

Fast forward to this week-end. It was his 25th birthday, and we were having a great time with friends. One of his girl friends that I just met was staring at my knitted shawlette and asked : "Are you his friend who knits?" I said yes. She was so excited to meet me, because apparently my friend talks about me when he wears his scarf. And he wears it. A lot.

As a knitter, there is absolutely nothing that can beat the feeling of a loved knitted gift. Absolutely nothing. And I think that, if we think about it, that's why we knit. Have a nice week!

Great post! I'm working on a not so worthy project right now and it is torture! I had to take a break and knit something awesome for a minute before I finish the final sleeve.

You are so right - knitted presents have to be made with love, not to order. I love the labels too but I'm not sure I would dare attach them to my socks and scarves

It is such a sweet thing when you find that perfect combination of friend and knitted item. I've been very, very lucky with that and have some lovely friends and a husband who really appreciate a knitted gift.

This could not be more true! I feel so good when I knit or crochet for someone and they are really truly enamored with the gift.

I'm so happy that you've found another person who is so appreciative! Most knitworthy in my life right now are Mom, Grandma, and Boyfriend. I hope to meet and befriend more knitworthy people in my life!

Your post is so right! I'm still a bit afraid of knitting for others but the few for whom I knitted (or their babies) where definitely knit worthy receivers! ;-)

WOW what great reactions to your knits! It's the BEST reaction to your knitting- even more so than 'I really like your scarf, where did you get it?' Which affords you the joy of saying 'I made it' (smugly)

I try to knit without expectations – I have to accept that my gift may not be received as warmly as I'd like. I'll do my best to make something geared to the recipient's tastes and needs, but we all know the end result can be unpredictable, and maybe it's not quite what they envisaged... and all this applies double if it's a surprise gift!

But recently I was super impressed with one giftee. I'd made him a thank-you scarf as a surprise; I checked with friends who knew him better that the scarf would be welcome, and that the design was to his taste. It was delivered by these friends, and while they reported that it was very well received, I didn't at first get a thank you (though he did thank me much later when we happened to be in touch). That was fine, I know he's not a very social chap (certainly not, as you say, one to extend his joy) and I wasn't offended; I thought he probably liked the scarf, based on reports, and that was enough.

What elevated him to the level of Would Definitely Knit Again was that I later got an email: scarf had been much worn, was dirty, probably shouldn't be chucked in machine, what should he do? Now that meant everything to me. It meant he was wearing it enough to get dirty, and cared about it enough to want to take care of it. That's all I needed to hear. Knit gift success. :)
